Boulder Design Hub seeks a deputy design director

The Boulder Design Hub is looking for a Deputy Design Director to join the leadership team. This is a great opportunity to join our team in Colorado and help direct the visual voice of our publications.

 As the Deputy Design Director, you will play a crucial role in supporting the efficient operation and growth of our design hub. You will work closely with the Design Hub Manager to oversee daily operations and lead a team of designers. Your primary focus will be on ensuring the smooth workflow, fostering a creative and collaborative environment, and maintaining high standards of design quality.

The Boulder Design Hub produces 5 daily publications (The Denver Post, St. Paul Pioneer Press, Boulder Daily Camera, Longmont Times Call and Loveland Herald), special sections and consults with publications produced outside of the Hub. The team consists of 3 managers and 17 designers.

What you will do:

  • Support Design Director and Deputy Design Director in the management of the hub
  • Help interview potential hires
  • Help train employees
  • Coverage of sick and late calls when scheduled as night deputy
  • Help develop and enforce design concepts
  • InDesign rotation and building pages in addition to other duties
  • Help foster a team-centered environment and ensure that corporate workplace policies are followed
  • Enforce deadlines and workflow of pages to the press
  • Demonstrate proofing techniques and help designers follow the proofing checklist
  • Help designers and editors rewrite headlines so they are accurate and fairly represented
  • Troubleshooting production issues
  • Communicate issues regarding systems, training, editors, publications, designers, etc. and recurring errors that will need to be addressed
  • Additional responsibilities as needed

What you will bring:

  • Bachelor’s degree in journalism, graphic design, visual communication, or a related field
  • Proven experience in design project management and team leadership
  • Proficiency in the Adobe Creative Suite (Illustrator, Photoshop, InDesign)
  • Strong understanding of design principles, copy editing, and visual communication
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to foster a collaborative work environment
  • Ability to handle multiple projects simultaneously and meet tight deadlines
  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to delivering high-quality design work
  • Creative problem-solving abilities and the drive to continuously improve processes
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively in a fast-paced and dynamic environment

The annual salary range is $55,000-$60,000.
