Boston Globe seeks tech reporter for BetaBoston

The Boston Globe is looking for a dynamic reporter for its fast-growing technology and innovation site, BetaBoston.

The ideal candidate is an energetic, enterprising, Internet-savvy reporter with a passion for online storytelling, someone who’s ready to dive deep into the city’s innovation economy and can spot hot topics, capture technology trends, and report and write with speed, confidence, and a compelling voice. This digital reporter will write about a variety of technology and innovation-related subjects for BetaBoston.com and the Boston Globe’s business section.

Key responsibilities:

Work with BetaBoston editors and Boston Globe business editors to produce superior journalism and meet goals of growing traffic online
Break news consistently and produce timely stories on startups, entrepreneurship, technology, innovation, and trends
Report and write multiple stories a day for BetaBoston.com
Monitor traffic and drive user engagement to stories
Capitalize on digital trends and memes
Maintain an active Twitter presence and cultivate a dedicated social media following
Create video, photo, and other multimedia elements for stories when appropriate
Maintain journalistic best practices that uphold Globe principles

Required experience and skills:

Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience
At least 3-5 years experience in online reporting for major national news organization
Demonstrated experience with technology or business coverage in a major news market
Proven track record in achieving editorial goals and driving online traffic growth
Familiarity with WordPress CMS and managing content flow
Ability to work in a rapidly changing, dynamic environment
Motivated, self-starting, independent, results-oriented, and professional
Willingness to innovate, explore new ideas, and acquire new skills
Drive, determination, attention to detail, and commitment to excellence

Hussman Sr. Distinguished Professor in business journalism at UNC-Chapel Hill. He is a former business journalist for Bloomberg News, Businessweek, The Atlanta Journal-Constitution, The Tampa Tribune and the Sarasota Herald-Tribune. He is the author of the leading business reporting textbook "Show me the Money: Writing Business and Economics Stories for Mass Communication" and "Thinking Things Over," a biography of former Wall Street Journal editor Vermont Royster.
