The Boston Globe is hiring a meteorologist to anchor its new weather team, expanding our coverage of daily weather, extreme events, and the science behind it all. We’re looking for a candidate with a degree in meteorology who also has experience in both daily weather forecasting as well as a desire to dig deep and tell compelling stories.
The team meteorologist will be the face of our weather expansion effort, building out the initiative, together with the weather editor. This person will lead our forecasting efforts, offering regular, daily projections in the form of written forecasts and reported stories, live blogs and other alternative story formats, as well as occasional appearances on video and TV. The candidate will also oversee major weather events throughout New England, heading up our severe weather coverage as a voice that readers turn to and trust. In addition, the meteorologist will work closely with our team of multimedia and data journalists, overseeing the forecasting technology, to ensure accuracy of projections.
The Globe’s approach to weather coverage aims to go beyond the frequent forecasts and breaking events that often dominate. We aim to tell readers what these weather patterns mean and why they matter – both to our daily commutes and to our communities in the years to come. The team meteorologist will thus be asked to conceive of and write thoughtful stories on the science behind our weather patterns, offering readers a 360 degree view of our weather patterns and why they matter.
Responsibilities:
- Write and report regular weather forecasts for BostonGlobe.com and its associated properties.
- Serve as the main team forecaster, offering daily assessments of weather patterns in the form of stories, charts and other reporting formats.
- Lead the charge on major weather events, offering urgent and accurate updates.
- Write and tell stories that explain our climate and weather patterns with context and nuance, while offering thorough analysis that helps readers make sense of it.
- Coordinate with the Globe’s database architects to ensure visual forecasting is both accurate and technologically sound.
- Work closely with other team members as the organization’s main forecaster, while working across departments to harness the many resources of the Globe newsroom to ensure the most complete coverage.
Qualifications:
- Five years experience as a staff meteorologist or weather/climate reporter.
- Background in forecasting the weather, together with experience writing about it.
- Meteorology or atmospheric science degree preferred, together with AMS or NWA seal of approval.
- Track record of working on deadlines and heading up severe weather coverage.
- Body of work that shows a sustained interest in thoughtful, explanatory work in the field of weather and climate.
- A willingness to adapt and be audience focused, with a curious mindset and a commitment to creating an inclusive work environment
The BGMP office is located in downtown Boston, near Faneuil Hall and Quincy Market, and is easily accessible by MBTA and commuter rail lines. This position is based in Boston, and candidates should be based in the area or willing to move
