Boston Globe seeks business reporter

Boston.com is seeking an experienced, creative, and digitally savvy writer for the site’s award-winning business section. This position requires someone hungry for success who has solid writing and reporting skills, social media expertise, experience with digital curation and content creation, and a background of developing creative and compelling online features. This is a full-time position.

The right candidate will desire to do groundbreaking things with this section as well as know business news inside and out, ranging from consumer news to personal finance to technology. He/she will understand the demands of the online reader and create digital content that meets and exceeds readers’ expectations. The candidate must have solid news judgment and develop traffic-driving features throughout the week.

Our ideal candidate is passionate about business news, and show a history of creating unique digital content, including special reports, slideshows, and interactive graphics.  A positive attitude is a must!

This is not an entry-level position. The business writer is directly responsible for the timely delivery of business news in the section and will work closely with the Boston.com breaking news desk to coordinate coverage throughout the day. The business writer is responsible for writing several posts a day, updating the business section, building new features, posting to social media, working with third-party content providers, and managing relationships with bloggers. This person reports to Boston.com’s features editor.

The business writer should also have a strong understanding of emerging technologies, basic project management skills, and how to work with programmers, product, advertising, and design teams to develop a new feature from concept to reality.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Bachelor’s degree.

Three to five years journalism experience, with at least two years in digital media.

One to two years business reporting experience.

Solid writing and reporting skills for a digital publication.

Knowledge of Photoshop, Web content management systems, Storify, and other digital technologies.

Knowledge of social media, including Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram.

Basic HTML

Working knowledge of SEO strategies and techniques

Additional desirable, but not required, qualifications

Ability to shoot, edit, and post video on the Web.

Basic Web programming skills.

Experience with photography

Basic or advanced design and digital layout skills

Experience with one or more of the following software: Photoshop, Final Cut Pro, Stormpost, Omniture, Eidos Methode CMS, JavaScript, advanced HTML, and Caspio Software.

Chris Roush was the dean of the School of Communications at Quinnipiac University in Hamden, Connecticut. He was previously Walter E. Hussman Sr. Distinguished Professor in business journalism at UNC-Chapel Hill. He is a former business journalist for Bloomberg News, Businessweek, The Atlanta Journal-Constitution, The Tampa Tribune and the Sarasota Herald-Tribune. He is the author of the leading business reporting textbook "Show me the Money: Writing Business and Economics Stories for Mass Communication" and "Thinking Things Over," a biography of former Wall Street Journal editor Vermont Royster.
