Boston Globe Media seeks a senior assistant managing editor for visual journalism

The Boston Globe is hiring a senior assistant managing editor for visual journalism. This is a high-level position charged with elevating some of the strongest forms of storytelling. photography, videography, and graphics in all of journalism.

This new position will manage the Globe’s award-winning photography, videography, print design, digital design, and multimedia storytelling teams. These units produce some of the most compelling journalism in our newsroom, and regularly win best-in-class awards for their respective fields. We’re looking for someone who can bring these units together and amplify our visual storytelling in a more cohesive way, ensuring the strengths of each team play off one another and complement an overall vision.

We’re also looking for someone who can train an eye toward the future and ensure we’re consistently at the cusp of what’s to come. Whether it’s virtual reality, AI, or another emerging field, the director will ensure we’re constantly experimenting and incorporating cutting edge technologies into our storytelling approaches.

The ideal candidate will have a wealth of experience working with photo, design, video, and development teams. They will possess a fully formed philosophy of how to effectively deploy graphics, videos, and photos in journalism, and understand that visual media is about effective and superior storytelling, not flashy online gimmicks.

The director will also be an experienced manager of people, able to rally a team of talented professionals around common goals and help build a culture that pushes visual journalism to the forefront of everything we do. They should be an expert communicator who can work across the newsroom with a wide variety of teams, disciplines, and personalities.

Qualifications: 

  • At least 5-8 years experience as a manager, preferably in a senior-level position leading large visual teams to successful results
  • Sterling visual journalist with storytelling experience across a variety of mediums.
  • Skilled manager of people who can influence a positive, supportive culture.
  • Collaborative leader capable of working across a matrixed organization.
  • Experience managing a budget, conducting timely performance reviews, and hiring staff
  • A willingness to adapt and be audience focused, with a curious mindset and a commitment to creating an inclusive work environment
