Bloomberg News seeks legal reporter

April 23, 2016

Posted by Chris Roush

It’s a big deal. Our Bloomberg News legal team breaks news and provides insights into the most important civil and criminal legal cases around the world, with emphasis on the U.S. and Europe. We cover criminal and regulatory investigations of individuals, companies and industry-wide practices ranging from insider trading and benchmark rigging on Wall Street to Volkswagen’s emissions-test cheating while also covering the ensuing trials.

You have a strong story-telling sensibility, a nose for where the surprise is and an ability to dig deep for scoops, whether from documents or people. You have an inquiring mind willing to ask questions and a willingness to work selflessly across teams. You enjoy translating complicated legal concepts and jargon into plain English. You possess a solid instinct for what’s the appropriate tone for a story ( legal stories come in all shapes and sizes, from the utterly insane to the gravely serious) and have the mental agility to shift from one to the next. You’re the perfect person to be a reporter on our legal reporting team!

How we work:

  • Bloomberg is a unique environment where you’ll have lots of support on your stories. This means that keeping people in the loop is required, sharing ideas and information is encouraged and joint bylines are common.

We’ll trust you to:

  • Understand courts and legal procedure and terminology (don’t worry, we can teach you!)
  • Know how to handle complicated stories using precise language
  • Have awareness of the major news stories on Wall Street, at companies, and in government and how they interact – or may interact – with the legal world
  • Generate and shape story ideas with a strong story-telling ability
  • Contribute to a range of platforms, including the web, Bloomberg Terminal, Bloomberg TV and Bloomberg BusinessWeek
