Bloomberg BNA seeks senior reporter for intellectual property

Bloomberg BNA, a wholly owned subsidiary of Bloomberg and a leading source of legal, regulatory, and business information for professionals, seeks a Senior Reporter to cover stories at the intersection of intellectual property, the law, and business/finance for our IP news team.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Develop and cover assigned beat, including legal issues at the intersection of business and intellectual property, such as trends in court rulings, developments of interest to intellectual property attorneys and their clients, as well as congressional and agency developments, including enforcement actions, federal legislation, and regulatory action.
  • Report, research, and write forward-looking daily news stories and features on the role of intellectual property as a business asset for a specialized readership of attorneys and corporate executives about leading domestic and international legal and policy issues and their impact on relevant industries. These would include high-profile legal cases, legislative and regulatory efforts, and industry best practices.
  • Consistently break news and deliver high-impact news and analytical stories for Bloomberg BNA and other Bloomberg platforms.
  • Develop and maintain high-level sources in government, the legal community and the private sector.
  • Propose, develop and execute enterprise story ideas. Propose and help develop graphics, charts, and other visual story elements.
  • Work with division data analytics manager on the development of stories that integrate original analysis of IP trends.
  • Remain current on issues and developments related to assigned beat.
  • Serve as a resource and backup for others covering related beats.
  • Participate in media interviews and industry events as a Bloomberg BNA representative.
  • Stay abreast of and effectively use electronic resources and other tools to perform the job effectively.
  • Participate in special projects and perform other duties as assigned.

REQUIREMENTS:

4+ years’ experience in journalism, including at least two years reporting on relevant topics. Mastery of reporting and writing skills required to produce daily news stories and features with minimal editing under deadline; proven ability to develop and cover a beat, including breaking news, maintaining a source network, and delivering in-depth analytical stories. Detailed knowledge of federal and/or state legislative, regulatory, and judicial processes; ability to serve as subject area expert and resource for others; excellent communication skills; proficient in MS Office; ability to use BBNA publishing tools and other technology effectively with BBNA training; excellent proofreading skills. Bachelor’s with coursework in English or journalism. Business or technology reporting experience preferred.
