Bismarck Tribune/Lee Enterprises seeks a state government reporter

The Bismarck Tribune, the newspaper in the capital of North Dakota, has an immediate opening for a full-time state government reporter.

The Tribune is a leader in covering state government and politics, a key watchdog role for the state. North Dakota has a Republican supermajority, which heightens the importance of strong reporting on the state Capitol.

The successful candidate will be expected to write daily stories as well as long-term investigative and enterprise stories. North Dakota has recently made national headlines for its abortion ban and legislation on culture war issues. The beat also includes coverage of Theodore Roosevelt National Park, the future Theodore Roosevelt Presidential Library and North Dakota’s congressional delegation.

The position is based in the Tribune newsroom when the Legislature is not in session, with space to work at the Capitol when legislators are in session every two years. We prefer candidates with previous reporting experience, but also will consider strong recent graduates.

Bismarck Tribune reporters routinely win statewide awards for their coverage, and the Tribune has been named Best of the Dakotas for general excellence. We have a strong culture of collaboration in our newsroom, which makes it a great environment for a new reporter to develop skills and grow in the profession.

The position is based in Bismarck, the state’s second-largest city. Bismarck and neighboring Mandan are along the Missouri River with miles of trails for outdoor recreation, along with a growing food and culture scene. The region also offers prime hunting and fishing opportunities and an easy drive to a national park. Bismarck-Mandan is a fun place to live and work, with the amenities of a big city without the traffic and high cost of living.

The Tribune is a member of Lee Enterprises and offers a full benefits package including medical, dental, a generous paid time off program and a 401(k) plan.
