PURPOSE OF THE ROLE

We are recruiting a senior technology reporter to work on coverage for our website (BBC.com/news) and app, based on the US West Coast, ideally in San Francisco.

As an experienced technology journalist you will primarily write and edit daily news stories and analysis about the leading US tech companies – Apple, Microsoft, Amazon, Alphabet, Meta, Nvidia, and Tesla – for our website (bbc.com/news) and app.

It’s a varied and exciting job: one day you may be writing about a sharp fall in Tesla sales and what’s behind it and the next editing a reported piece about what Sir Jony Ive plans to do at OpenAI.

WHY JOIN THE TEAM
It’s an exciting time to be part of BBC News as we grow in North America. Our independent, impartial and unrivalled global journalism has made us one of the most trusted news brands in the US, where we reach tens of millions of people each week across digital, TV and radio.

Be part of BBC News’s Money Work and Technology division, which provides material to all BBC News programmes and the website, both in the UK and internationally. Our aim is to tell and break important technology stories in a way that general audiences understand. We aim to always make it clear why a story is important and how it could impact them and their lives.

YOUR KEY RESPONSIBILITIES AND IMPACT:

  • Ability to work independently from a West Coast base location (ideally San Francisco), and have a wide remit generating story ideas and chasing news lines as part of a fast-paced news operation.
  • Cover breaking technology stories and company results later in the US day, working closely with colleagues in New York and Washington DC, the money and work team in Singapore and our technology correspondent based in San Francisco.
  • Ability to both write stories at speed and edit stories. While a background and contact book in covering the tech industry would be a significant advantage, you must also be able to cover general economic and business news.
  • Ability to read and make sense of company results, understand financial markets and be able to react quickly to major breaking news, adding context, analysis and fresh information to online stories as they evolve.
  • Writing breaking news stories quickly and accurately under tight time pressure and must demonstrate experience of translating complex stories into accessible and engaging online content.
  • Clear communication and a collaborative spirit is vital as you will work with a globe-spanning team that hands on stories around the clock.

YOUR SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE

ESSENTIAL CRITERIA:

  • Strong technology expertise with a track record of writing about major US tech firms – Apple, Microsoft, Amazon, Alphabet, Meta, Nvidia, and Tesla.
  • Substantial experience of writing for digital audiences including breaking news with attention to accuracy, context and tone.
  • Proven ability to cut through jargon, and make complex stories appealing and understandable to a general audience.
  • Proven ability to make decisions on which stories will have the most impact and come up with angles and approaches to the big stories of the day that will help us reach new and diverse audiences.
  • Excellent editorial judgement and understanding of the BBC’s editorial values.
  • Editing experience  – subbing and revising other reporter’s copy.
