Baton Rouge Advocate seeks a business editor

The Advocate, Louisiana’s biggest media organization and a Pulitzer Prize winner, is looking for a business editor for its Baton Rouge newsroom to coach reporters on daily coverage, manage breaking news in a competitive digital media market and help develop stories that examine trends, highlight local entrepreneurs and tackle important economic issues.

Job Responsibilities

•       Assign reporters stories and help them develop story ideas

•       Work with reporters and other desks to maintain timely and robust digital coverage

•       Understand digital metrics and help the company meet its digital goals

•       Edit stories and rework them as needed, using proper grammar and following AP style guidelines

•       Plan daily and weekly Business pages

•       Meet all deadlines for projects as requested by editors

•       Mentor reporters and help them develop their careers

•       Help plan and stage events for the business community

•       Handle administrative tasks

Job Skills & Qualifications

Required:

•       Ability to work some nights and holidays

•       A focus on producing accurate and factual stories

•       Experience as a newspaper editor or reporter

•       Proficiency with computers and other office equipment

Chris Roush

Chris Roush was the dean of the School of Communications at Quinnipiac University in Hamden, Connecticut. He was previously Walter E. Hussman Sr. Distinguished Professor in business journalism at UNC-Chapel Hill. He is a former business journalist for Bloomberg News, Businessweek, The Atlanta Journal-Constitution, The Tampa Tribune and the Sarasota Herald-Tribune. He is the author of the leading business reporting textbook "Show me the Money: Writing Business and Economics Stories for Mass Communication" and "Thinking Things Over," a biography of former Wall Street Journal editor Vermont Royster.
