Journo Jobs

Bangor Daily News seeks a St. John Valley reporter

The Bangor Daily News is seeking a smart, hard-charging news reporter to cover news in Maine’s St. John Valley.

This reporter would join a talented team of journalists dedicated to producing direct, honest, comprehensive and compelling news coverage in northern Maine.

Located at the top of Aroostook County on the Canadian border, the Valley is one of the most remote regions in the continental U.S. and includes tight-knit communities from Van Buren to Allagash, including Fort Kent, a college town. It’s a place of astonishing beauty, with a vibrant Acadian French culture and a high quality of life for outdoors enthusiasts.

We can all but promise that you will see a moose if you take this job.

Reporters here cover the University of Maine’s most northern outpost, local government and police, an independent hospital, one of Maine’s last paper mills, border issues and an annual dog sled race that draws Iditarod-bound mushers from across the world. And of course there’s the spinning ice carousel that’s a world record contender.

This is an ideal position for an experienced journalist who is eager for a new challenge and who has skill in developing sources in small or insular communities. The ideal candidate is an aggressive self-starter who moves quickly and is passionate about landing important scoops. The reporter’s work would appear on the Bangor Daily News’ website, daily print newspaper, and hyperlocal print and web products.

We are Maine’s most-read media outlet, with a staff of journalists that stretches from the border of Canada to the boundaries of the Granite State. We blanket Maine’s political, social, cultural and economic trends, drive our state’s public conversation, and hold our officials accountable. We are committed to informing our community, and we see this role as key to fulfilling that commitment.

In doing so, we bring Maine together.

If you think you might be our next great hire, please submit your resume, cover letter and links to at least three clips to jdyer@bangordailynews.com.
