Axios seeks a deputy ME for business

Axios is a fast-growing media organization dedicated to providing trustworthy, award-winning news in an audience-first format. We’re hiring a Deputy Managing Editor to help oversee our Business coverage.

Why it Matters: Axios has built a newsroom of more than 150 talented journalists committed to providing our readers the most trustworthy information in the most efficient way possible. Reporting to our Managing Editor, Business & Markets, the Deputy Managing Editor will play a critical role in sharpening our business coverage, supporting our talent and helping steer Axios to new successes.

  • Our Business desk excels in a crowded field, winning SABEW’s “Best Newsletter” honor two years in a row and featuring a nationally recognized staff who regularly contribute to cable news and national radio with insightful news and analysis. The Deputy Managing Editor of the Business team will help take the desk to new heights in scoops, analysis and insights that serve our readers.

Go Deeper: The role comes with a range of responsibilities, including:

  • Help the Managing Editor oversee coverage planning, story ideation, long-term projects and quality control.
  • Work with the dedicated section editors to ensure a robust daily output.
  • Step in as needed to edit, and write for, newsletters.
  • Contribute and fill in as needed on high-level planning meetings.

The Details: Ideal candidates will embody an entrepreneurial spirit, a passion for Axios’ mission and have the following skills:

  • Strong interpersonal skills  to help oversee and support a team of journalists.
  • Editing experience in a fast-paced news environment.
  • Demonstrated experience conceptualizing big ideas and seeing them through.
  • Some management experience a plus.
  • Experience with tech coverage (large-cap Silicon Valley companies, AI innovators, etc) a plus.
  • A belief in Smart Brevity as the core writing style of Axios.
  • Strong writing and editing skills for both online and newsletter platforms, and the ability to translate stories across them.
  • Experience working across teams to produce quality content.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of the digital and social media landscape.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to assign and manage multiple stories at once.

Starting salary for this role is in the range of $140,000 – $190,000 and is dependent on numerous factors, including but not limited to location, work experience, and skills. This range does not include other compensation and benefits. Axios’ compensation philosophy takes into account cost of labor differentials across the country. Because this is a remote-optional job posting, this salary range takes into account all possible locations within the United States, but candidates will only be eligible for the salary range for their location.
