Automotive News seeks an energy reporter

Automotive News, an influential and dynamic news organization owned by Crain Communications Inc., is seeking a world-class journalist to play a key role in our coverage of electrification and energy, and their roles in a rapidly changing transportation landscape.

This position calls for a versatile journalist with high integrity and proven experience covering transportation, technology and/or energy news for credible news organizations. Candidates must be team players and capable of balancing real-time and long-term story priorities. This position will require occasional travel, along with some availability during off hours when news breaks.

This reporter will cover the way electric vehicles fit into the broader energy ecosystem. A primary responsibility will be covering battery companies and developing understanding of the relative merits of lithium-ion batteries versus other emerging chemistries.

Another central theme includes covering industry efforts to establish a domestic supply chain for battery materials and the geopolitical ramifications of this fledgling industry.

Beat themes will include how both range and charging availability influence consumer demand. Further, this reporter will cover infrastructure issues and how utility companies are pushing to overhaul the electric grid in preparation for EV proliferation.

Basic Qualifications

  • Must be based in the United States.
  • Applicants must demonstrate a passion for breaking news and scoops.
  • Successful professional journalism experience with credible, respected news organizations.
  • Proven reporting and writing talents with attention to style, detail and nuance.
  • Must be able to work quickly and accurately in real-time.
  • Exemplary teamwork skills.
  • Strong organizational skills.
  • Bachelor’s degree in a relevant program.

Preferences

  • Experience covering beats within transportation or energy for business-minded news organizations.
  • Comfortable with public speaking, on video, podcasts or other platforms.
  • Proven track record of quality and productivity.
  • Strong source development skills.
  • Brings a document frame of mind; adept at finding stories in public records and SEC filings.
  • Experience using Chartbeat and other audience-analytics tools in engaging readers and evaluating performance of coverage.
