Asheville Citizen-Times seeks business reporter

January 9, 2016

Posted by Chris Roush

The Citizen-Times in Asheville, N.C., is looking for a technology-minded journalist to report on Asheville’s business sector, from its local innovators to its larger industries.

Asheville is home to a unique mix of crafters, entrepreneurs and fervently independent small-business owners. It is also home to innovative companies and manufacturers with a bigger footprint.

The cornerstone of this beat will be in keeping a close eye on openings and closings, and area business trends, while chronicling the ideas and visions in the heart of creative Appalachia.

Candidates should be adept at personality profiles and great storytelling, but the best person for the job will have skill balancing long-term pieces based on data analysis with granular bits of beat reporting.

You should be just as at home in quirky co-working spaces downtown as you would be profiling a builder of hand-crafted rocking chairs deep in the mountains or the manager of a jet engine factory.

REQUIREMENTS:

  • The right candidate will have 2+ years’ experience writing news reports rapidly for online, as well as a variety of digital skills including photo, video and social media. While we’re looking for excellent reporters and writers, your ability to handle a camera in a pinch and shoot video is a plus — we admire versatility. The ability to connect with the community via social media and in person is part of the job.
  • Candidates must have a valid driver’s license with a good driving record, proof of insurance and own transportation. Experience at a daily newspaper is preferred, but recent college graduates with a strong portfolio will be considered.
