The Arkansas Democrat-Gazette is looking for an assistant sports editor to oversee daily and advance sports coverage.
The Democrat-Gazette, part of a family owned company based in Little Rock, reaches most of its readers through its innovative iPad program that gives subscribers an electronic replica of a newspaper while also giving them access to additional content. The newspaper also provides content through its website, arkansasonline.com.
The assistant sports editor manages a staff of 13 people — reporters, copy editors and page designers — plus uses content from sister publications and wire services to provide coverage of primarily high school, college, professional and amateur sports.
Tasks include assigning stories, photos and graphics for upcoming and that day’s events; and planning how coverage will be displayed.
The assistant sports editor also will work with the newspaper’s online team to promote content and to alert readers to breaking news, such as final scores.
Candidates for this position, first and foremost, must have extensive knowledge of sports and the importance that readers place on its coverage.
The assistant sports editor should be good at supervising people, scheduling and working with other parts of the newsroom. Knowledge of the newspaper production process is important.
The ideal candidate will be thinking both how the print product will look and how to give eager readers that content online.
