Albany Business Review seeks news editor

The Albany Business Review has an opening in its newsroom for an enthusiastic, news-loving news editor.

We need a news editor who thrives in a fast-paced digital environment working across platforms, including mobile, social media and email newsletters. The news editor is responsible for the daily management of content for the newsroom’s digital platforms, including overseeing social media strategies, with the underlying objectives of growing our audience, increasing engagement and extending the Business Review’s brand in the digital space.

The position requires solid news judgment, strong headline writing, comfort with technology and familiarity with SEO, site metrics and social media. The News Editor must balance the highest standards for content with ambitious traffic and engagement objectives. We break news for a very sophisticated audience that places a high value on being informed. Our standards are high,

Duties:

• In our newsroom, the News Editor leads our social media efforts

• Generates and executes digital content strategies.

• Oversees news emails

• Produces and maintain journalistic content on the Business Review’s website.

• Tracks metrics with an eye toward constant improvement.

• Works with editors, reporters and others to plan new content .

• Helps staff identify and deploy tactics to meet traffic and engagement goals.

• Works well with colleagues in design, research and technology.

• Gathers and upload selected graphics, photos.

Skills:

• Strong headline writing and copy-editing skills.

• Solid grasp of Associated Press style.

• HTML skills.

• Adept with content management systems.

• Excellent written and verbal communications skills.

Experience:

• Online media and SEO experience.

• Reporting and editing experience with media organizations that focus on breaking news.

• Video production experience is a plus.

Hussman Sr. Distinguished Professor in business journalism at UNC-Chapel Hill. He is a former business journalist for Bloomberg News, Businessweek, The Atlanta Journal-Constitution, The Tampa Tribune and the Sarasota Herald-Tribune. He is the author of the leading business reporting textbook "Show me the Money: Writing Business and Economics Stories for Mass Communication" and "Thinking Things Over," a biography of former Wall Street Journal editor Vermont Royster.
