Alaska Journal of Commerce seeks business reporter

The Alaska Journal of Commerce is seeking a business news reporter to become part of its team. Applicant’s main beat would be commercial fisheries, with secondary beats including telecoms, banking, health care and general business news.

Experience is ideal, but we will work with the right person to train you on a complex beat that is a major driver of the Alaska economy as the state’s top private sector employer and 60 percent of U.S. seafood landings coming from state and federal waters.

You will be responsible for coverage of the state, federal and international regulatory process, as well as in-season news. Balanced reporting and source development are a must. Writing requirements include stories for both the weekly print edition and daily web content.

Applicants must be able to write accurate and engaging stories, have a good grasp of grammar and AP style with proven editing skills, and be able to work well under deadline. Photography skills and working knowledge of Creative Suite products including Photoshop, InDesign and InCopy are preferred.

The position is also a backup editor role in the newsroom to handle getting the paper to press when the managing editor is away.

The Alaska Journal of Commerce is the state’s main source of business news. The Journal is a weekly publication based in Anchorage, the state’s largest city and economic hub with world-class recreational opportunities.

The position is full time with regular business hours and occasional evening or weekend assignments. Some travel is required. Must be over 21 and drug testing will be required prior to hire.
