Al Jazeera English seeks a researcher, UpFront

UpFront on Al Jazeera English is looking for a researcher to join our team for the upcoming season of the show, starting in September.

UpFront is Al Jazeera English’s flagship weekly current affairs interview show, reaching beyond the headlines to delve into the issues setting the news agenda.

We are looking for a dedicated researcher with excellent writing, information sourcing, and communication skills to join our small, but mighty, team. The ideal candidate will have excellent news judgement, a wealth of knowledge on the issues of the day and an uncanny ability to connect the dots when looking at a story. They will be resourceful, a meticulous fact-checker, with a superb eye for detail and strong organizational skills. The position is a vital member of the team, with room for growth.

This is a freelance position for the upcoming season of UpFront, the successful candidate will be expected to work from the Al Jazeera office in Washington DC.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide through research and background information for studio based current affairs discussions
  • Assist Producers in the preparation for interview recordings, providing back up research for interviews and fact checking questions
  • Assist producers in finding visual elements for interview, including video and stills on a specific topic
  • Pitch segment and interview ideas, including proposed guests
  • Perform other duties relevant to the job as requested

Qualifications/Requirements:

  • Experience in TV or related fields as a Researcher/Fact Checker on factual programmes of an appropriate type (documentaries, discussions or news magazines)
  • Meticulous fact-checking skills
  • Ability to assist in planning and organizing logistics for recording and production
  • Ability to problem-solve under pressure
  • Ability to juggle multiple tasks and deadlines, prioritising as needed
  • Ability to organise information and media, according to relevance and importance
  • Ability to communicate effectively with other members of the team
  • Ability to complete tasks accurately and on time
  • Must possess a thorough knowledge of current affairs and the complex issues of the day
  • Able to take initiative and show resourcefulness when approaching a complex topic
  • Able to organise, analyse and synthesise information from many different sources on a topic and distill them down to what helps strengthen the points of our interviews
