AFP seeks an editor for North America newsdesk

Global news leader Agence France-Presse (AFP) is seeking a dynamic, experienced editor to work on its North American English-language news desk, producing multimedia stories for a worldwide audience.

The main desk is based in Washington DC – the agency’s English-language editing hub for North and Latin America – but there could be an option to work from our West Coast office in Los Angeles.

The role mainly involves writing and editing stories in English, and translating from French and Spanish into English, while embedding AFP’s rich visual content into multimedia formats. Editors have frequent opportunity to report and write stories themselves, and also provide backup to the team that operates AFP’s social media accounts.

While there is a primary focus on the Americas, desk editors will become involved in stories from around the globe. The role can lead to longer-term correspondent postings within AFP, as well as opportunities to work across the organization’s other editorial departments.

The workload is heavy but rewarding with the United States often topping the global news agenda: in any one shift, editors may need to turn their attention from a political crisis to an international conflict, to stories about technology, health, science and entertainment.

Candidates will have a proven track record in journalism, with several years of news reporting and editing experience. We are looking for exemplary writing skills, excellent news judgement, and an ability to work under pressure in a fast-paced newsroom. Working knowledge of French and Spanish would be a major advantage.

As an equal opportunity employer, Agence France-Presse rejects discrimination based on race, gender, nationality, religion, sexual orientation or any other factor.

Interested candidates should submit a cover letter and resume to Giles Hewitt and Sebastian Smith

Closing date: 4 Jan 2024
