Advance seeks a retail reporter in New Jersey

NJ Advance Media (NJ.com) is seeking a beat reporter to cover local retail in New Jersey.

Retail is a multi-billion dollar industry in New Jersey, and a content area our audience craves. They want to know what’s opening and closing, and where new jobs will be created. This position will include creating and aggregating content about new businesses, chains, restaurants, and store openings and closings around the state.

The Reporter is critical to our organizational success and is charged with covering news for the state’s largest news website. This is a fast-paced beat in a dynamic, engaged community.

The right candidate understands the importance of breaking news quickly and accurately, is versatile, and can add depth and a human perspective to news stories. Candidates should also be able to balance day-to-day news coverage with longer-term enterprise projects.

The ideal candidate will be motivated to own the retail beat. In addition to writing multiple articles daily, the candidate will have an opportunity to contribute to our affiliate revenue and commerce initiatives. We are looking for someone who is competitive with strong writing, communication and social media skills. An understanding of SEO best practices is encouraged.

We are paving the way for the future of digital news, yet we remain grounded in the ethics of solid journalism.

The job will mostly be during business hours. We are currently working remotely until it is safe to return to an office setting.

You should apply if you have:

  • Minimum 1 year journalism experience with a proven ability in reporting and writing
  • A solid understanding of news writing, journalism ethics and story structure
  • The ability to work independently and prioritize tasks appropriately
  • A passion for informing readers, as well as digesting and understanding audience metrics
  • The skills to find and create content via social media mining
