Advance Media New York seeks a city reporter

Syracuse.com and The Post-Standard are looking for a city issues reporter to join our watchdog/public affairs team.

It’s a meaty beat: A housing crisis. Systemic poverty and segregation. The teardown of an interstate ripping through neighborhoods. Social justice issues. There’s also great opportunity: A reinvigorated downtown. Big new businesses. A lively arts and dining scene. Thriving colleges and medical centers.

We don’t cover meetings. We look to have impact. We value reporters wired to build sources, dig into data, solve problems, find fault, and advocate for people who need help.

You’ll find support in this newsroom that is expanding its audience and reach, learning new approaches and driving the discussion here. Our skilled newsroom has won national awards and dominated the state AP awards for years.

This isn’t an entry-level job. To be considered, you’ll have to demonstrate that you’ve delivered difficult work somewhere.

Qualified candidates should have:

  • A bachelor’s degree in journalism or communications or related field or experience.
  • The ability to work quickly, but with accuracy and good news judgment.
  • Watchdog journalism experience.
  • Ability to develop and cultivate sources.
  • Digital storytelling skills and an open mind to trying new approaches.
  • Relentless curiosity and a good sense of humor.

Candidates should provide links to their published stories and a cover letter wouldn’t hurt. Tell us what you could do for us!
