Advance Local Media seeks a news reporter

This is a remote position with a preference of being based within the state of Texas.

Advance Local has an exciting opportunity for a News Reporter in Texas for our brand-new website launching this summer, with a proven track record of writing meaningful, engaging and entertaining stories that reflect the rich diversity of Texas.

You can live anywhere in the state of Texas, and need a strong passion in journalism that resonates with diverse audiences. We don’t want to tell the same stories as traditional news outlets in the state. We are looking for a reporter with energy, empathy and news ideas that will foster a diverse group of sources.

What you’ll be doing:

  • In this role, you’ll find support and resources to develop in-depth investigative projects
  • Provide continuous coverage of topics that resonate with Texans
  • Break news, aggregate relevant headlines, work with the social producer to identify stories and engage the community
  • Simultaneously manage multiple assignments, self-edit and capture photos and videos in addition to writing clean and interesting copy
  • Contribute to podcasts and videos

For this position, we are looking for an experienced Reporter:

  • Who can work with speed, creativity, accuracy and good judgment
  • Really want to be first to report something
  • Engage on social media platforms regularly and follow trends
  • Are news junkies with a pulse on the big stories happening at any given time
  • Have humility, relentless curiosity and bring passion to your reporting
  • Have skills in digital storytelling via text, photo and video

Our ideal candidates will have the following:

  • Degree in journalism or communications or combination of education and related work experience with a proven ability in journalism reporting and writing
  • Spanish language skills
  • Five or more years’ experience building, maintaining and engaging an active audience
  • Ability to work independently under deadline pressure and prioritize tasks appropriately
  • Solid understanding of news writing, journalistic ethics and story structure
  • Demonstrated capability in capitalizing on high-value topics by engaging audiences in frequency and urgency
  • Proven ability to utilize a broad set of tools to tell stories and engage the audience
