Advance Local Media seeks a life & culture reporter

This is a remote position within the state of Texas.

Advance Local is looking to welcome a Life + Culture Reporter to our Texas team for our brand-new website launching this summer. The Life + Culture Reporter will tell stories that showcase the rich diversity and culture of Texas, from NIOSA to Charro Days, Eeyore’s Birthday and everything in between.

The ideal candidate will be passionate about food, music, art and telling stories that connect to readers. You’ll help readers find the best beaches, learn to make tortillas and laugh at all the ways that cascaróns have made Easter special. The Life + Culture Reporter will be comfortable taking photos, videos and creating clips for social media platforms, as well as engaging readers on Reddit and other platforms.

To excel in this role, you will be a driven, dynamic reporter and writer with the ability to deliver a high volume of content every day. You should be able to proactively identify stories that are trending and respond quickly, keeping the quality of content consistent and engaging.

What you’ll be doing:

  • Spotlight the state’s diverse cultural scenes and be an advocate for the artists, musicians and chefs that contribute to its ever-expanding growth
  • Provide broad coverage to reach underserved communities, identifying and elevating restaurants and food trends in these communities
  • Write candidly about our state and the bonds we share
  • Help readers find the best beaches, festivals and hidden gems
  • Engage with Texans on social media to discover story ideas and answer their questions about the life and culture of Texas

Our ideal candidates will have the following:

  • Bachelor’s degree in journalism or communications or equivalent education and related work experience with a proven ability in journalism reporting and writing
  • Spanish language skills
  • Two or more years’ experience in journalism, preferably including experience in life and culture reporting
  • Possession of a clear and engaging writing style
  • Ability to work independently under deadline pressure and prioritize tasks appropriately
  • Sound understanding of news writing, journalistic ethics and story structure
  • Experience using social media to find stories and promote content
  • Understanding of the methods and tools used to deliver content across a variety of platforms
  • An ability to work collaboratively
