ACBJ seeks senior director of editorial operations

The Senior Director of Editorial Operations (DEO) oversees the corporate support operations of The Business Journals content teams. This oversight includes supporting local newsrooms to ensure the content they’re creating meets the content strategy and goals as set by the Senior Director of Content Strategy (DCS) and senior management.

The DEO’s primary goal is to enable newsrooms to meet their goals by assisting with day-to-day operational needs, problem-solving with local stakeholders and communicating effectively.  This individual will work with the DCS on the development of annual budgets and goals and ensure that local markets have the tools to meet their goals.

Skills & Experience
  • A deep understanding of local business news, and the audiences interested in such content
  • A deep understanding of social media, search and other tools to increase readership
  • Superior communication skills, including an ability to articulate goals, strategies and challenges to senior management and local newsrooms.
  • Must know how to nurture and adapt an existing brand to suit changing circumstances within the company and the industry.
  • Must be incredibly self-motivated and innovative.
  • Must be creative with a unique approach to persistent problems, adding value to existing products and deriving positives from negatives.
  • Must be able to take charge of any situation, exerting a dominant vision and encouraging others to support that vision.
  • Must be able to multitask and manage a number of different projects at once.
Job Responsibilities
  • Work with the Senior Director of Content Strategy to develop an operational plan for each newsroom to ensure that they continue to meet both reader and business needs locally
  • Work with key stakeholders including the DCS on the development of editorial goals, then monitor and implement those goals
  • Ensure content maintains the accuracy, style and quality readers expect from TBJ while meeting the highest standards of ethics in journalism
  • Develop day-to-day management strategies with Publishers and each local newsroom to maximize and retain staff
  • Work with the analytics team to develop and refine editorial dashboards
  • Work with senior management and key stakeholders to ensure content created is growing audience and meeting goals and needs of the business
  • Oversees the editorial training team to develop and refine a training program that educates, nurtures and maximizes content creators
  • Ensure Diversity, Equity and Inclusion initiatives are a priority and valuable connection point to local communities
  • Work with the relevant people-teams to increase employee engagement and retention
  • Assist with hiring, and performance management of local newsroom personnel in accordance with company policies ensuring that each employee meets the requirements of their position
  • Assist with the performance evaluation of writers, editors, photographers, and other staff members to ensure that they are meeting the ACBJ’s standards for quality and productivity
  • Participation in long-term strategy meetings as requested
  • Develop new business ideas and direction with an eye towards content-centric opportunities
  • Works closely with revenue, audience, design, and technology teams to ensure ACBJ initiatives are achieved
