910 Media Group seeks a special projects editor

The Company: 910 Media Group’s roots began on air in 1954 and we have been growing and evolving ever since!  We are proud to be the news and content leader in Northern Michigan!  Today, we are home to news, weather, and entertainment content, 9&10 News (CBS), Local 32 (Fox), and CW 32 as well as ME TV, Lake Effect Digital (digital agency), MyNorth Media (Traverse Magazine) and an array of digital assets.

The Position: Special Projects Editor
The special projects editor knows the difference between a topic and a story, can guide a writer in their reporting to bring out the most compelling characters and story elements, is skilled at structuring longform narratives for maximum impact, and is a deft line editor with a love of elegant writing. You will work with both internal staff and freelancers, and the ideal candidate is someone who derives joy from helping talented writers grow. You should be good at delivering clear, thorough, and empathetic feedback.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • This is a writing-intensive editorial position requiring a high-level understanding of narrative craft. You should be willing and able to model best practices, mentor junior writers and editors, and pinch hit as needed, leading by example and modeling storytelling excellence. Responsibilities include:
  • Assigning, tracking, editing custom/sponsored content stories, and creating custom content features that represent the quality of the MyNorth brand
  • Pitch, edit, write/contribute to monthly features as needed
  • Contributing stories to unique digital content
  • Participating in brainstorms with other editors, bringing original ideas and helping fine-tune others
  • Overseeing the Health & Wellness publication, including concept, assigning/editing and writing stories
  • Working closely with art, production, research, copy editing, and digital teams
  • Working with executive editor for line-up concepts and to polish and perfect articles

Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree in English, communications, journalism
  • 3 + years of relevant writing and editing experience, leisure/lifestyle/general interest titles preferred
  • Experience with and curiosity about stories on business, culture, travel, dining, home, lifestyle, natural history and history of Northern Michigan
  • Demonstrated ability to turn feature story manuscripts into first-rate articles
  • Excellent skills in structuring narratives and line editing for rhythm, beauty, and impact
  • Ability to work collaboratively and collegially with a team of fact-checkers, copy editors, designers, photo editors, digital producers, social media producers, and other team members
  • Facility with headlines, subheads, captions, and other elements of story building and promotion
