Washington Post business editor David Cho, deputy business editor Zachary Goldfarb and economics editor Damian Paletta sent out the following announcement on Wednesday:

We are thrilled to announce Jeff Stein will be The Washington Post’s new White House economics reporter.

In his new position, Jeff will write about the impact of White House economic policy on the lives and livelihoods of Americans across the country, as well as the central role these policies will play in the 2020 presidential election. Jeff also will lead coverage of the White House Office of Management and Budget and the Treasury Department under President Trump, as they assist in the Trump administration’s efforts to remake the American economy.

Jeff has spent the last two years as a reporter on the economic policy team. He covered the drafting and impact of the 2017 tax law; the battle over Trump’s tax returns; and the Trump administration’s farm bailout, among other topics related to the trade war. He also has written about the 2020 Democratic presidential primary and policy ideas including Medicare-for-all and the four-day workweek.

Jeff was previously a reporter for Vox, where he was one of two reporters to start that publication’s Congress team. In 2014, Jeff founded the Ithaca Voice, a local news non-profit. Created in response to the ongoing crisis in local newsrooms, the Ithaca Voice continues to lead news coverage in the Ithaca area six years after its inception.

His first job after college was as a crime reporter at the Syracuse Post-Standard, where he was awarded young journalist of the year by the New York Associated Press. Jeff graduated from Cornell with a degree in history in 2013.

Jeff lives in Columbia Heights with his girlfriend and their 2-year-old rescue dog, Acorn, whose ears look like Baby Yoda’s. Both Jeff and Acorn are avid fans of the New York Rangers.

Jeff will start his new role immediately. Please join us in congratulating him.
