Gordon Fairclough, the global world coverage chief at The Wall Street Journal, sent out the following announcement on Wednesday:
I am very happy to announce the appointment of Timothy Martin as The Wall Street Journal’s bureau chief in Korea, effective immediately.
A Journal veteran who has worked in Chicago, Atlanta, New York and Seoul, Tim has proven himself to be a tenacious journalist and gifted writer.
As acting chief in Seoul this year, he led stellar coverage of everything from pre-dawn North Korean rocket launches to a last-minute summit at the DMZ between President Trump and Kim Jong Un.
Tim, now 35 years old, started at the Journal as a summer intern. He’s held a wide variety of posts, changing beats nearly every year. He’s written broadly on subjects ranging from potato farmers to painkiller addiction to pension funds.
Tim joined the Seoul bureau in early 2017, jumping on the Samsung beat.
Born in Gwangju, South Korea, Tim grew up in rural central Illinois. He is a two-time marathoner and lives with his wife, Eun-jin, in Seoul.
Tim will report to me.
