WSJ seeks editor to oversee live journalism and special content

WSJ 2017The Editor, Live Journalism & Special Content, oversees and develops programming for our growing live journalism and events business. He or she also oversees Journal Reports and other special content that grows out of live journalism projects.

Tasks/Responsibilities

Content

  • Working with editors and reporters in different coverage areas and with the Dow Jones Conferences & Events team, drive development of programming for conferences and events, including existing Journal brands such as CEO Council, WSJ.D Live and the Women In series.
  • Conceive and pursue innovative ideas for new conferences, events and other forms of live journalism, working closely with the newsroom and commercial partners.
  • Explore and expand our use of live journalism content in other outlets, especially Journal Reports, finding ways to grow both products in tandem through closer relationships both around the content and around relevant business opportunities, working closely with the newsroom and with our corporate colleagues.
  • Working with the office of the Managing Editor, build out the newsroom’s media skills and public-speaking training so as to develop these skills in individual journalists who may be called upon to make public appearances.
  • Create and implement a publication strategy, working with the Audience Insight team, the Digital Strategist, and the Digital and Print editors, to grow the reach of our live journalism and Special Reports while upholding the standards placed on all our journalism and journalists.

  • Inspire team and our journalists to produce their best work on all platforms.
  • Contribute by attitude, example and encouragement to a culture of creativity, enthusiasm, motivation, ownership and professionalism.
  • Manage, motivate and develop staff to consistently produce high-quality work.
  • Set clear objectives for direct reports, cascading effectively down.
  • Set agenda and make and articulate clear decisions.
  • Set standards for individual and team performance – ongoing and in regular performance reviews.
  • Contribute to the shaping and management of staff-development programs.
  • Identify high-potential members of the team and ensure they are effectively developed.
  • Under the direction of the Managing Editor: Manage the budgets and track and meet budget goals (travel budgets, fees for external services, equipment etc.).

Key Attributes/Knowledge/Experience

  • Deep understanding of the brand values and mission of The Wall Street Journal and how our journalism should be selected, executed and presented in line with those values.
  • Deep understanding of the live-journalism business and opportunities.
  • Experience in public speaking preferred.
  • Familiar with methods of media and speaker training.
  • Lead and inspire our newsroom teams to come up with ideas.
  • Know how to delegate, brief and give constructive feedback. Excellent communication skills.
  • Sound organizational abilities: setting agendas, managing projects, maintaining a slate of forward planning that is crucial for implementing the coverage area’s strategy.
  • Innovative and creative thinker, leader and manager.
