Michael Calderone of Politico writes about the departure of two members of The Wall Street Journal‘s investigative team from its Washington bureau, leaving only one member remaining, and wonders what that signals for investigative stories in the paper.
Calderone writes, “A Journal spokesperson confirmed the two resignations, but declined to comment further.
“But Paul Steiger, the Journal’s former top editor who now runs the investigative journalism newsroom, ProPublica, called the departures a ‘loss for the Journal.’
“Steiger noted that it’s a ‘very dynamic period’ in the industry, where the cutbacks at newspapers will force reporters to start looking for alternatives.
“Still, Steiger hasn’t given up on his old paper’s ability to dig for a story.
“‘I would expect that investigative reporting will remain part of the DNA of the Wall Street Journal,’ Steiger said.”
