The Wall Street Journal seeks a senior editor to join its growing Mobile News Desk.
As part of journalism’s most-experienced mobile and tablet team, the senior mobile editor will help oversee the publication and curation of news for WSJ’s global mobile platforms, including the iPhone and iPad, Android phones and tablets, the Apple Watch, Apple News and emerging devices.
Mobile is increasingly the dominant platform for news and information and this editor will play an important role in serving WSJ readers and helping the newsroom embrace mobile-specific approaches.
The ideal candidate has experience as a journalist, strong writing and editing skills, rock-solid news judgment and substantial tech savvy. Candidates should be able to meet tight deadlines and independently and creatively troubleshoot editorial and publishing challenges in a fast-paced environment where the tasks and the tech change rapidly. A high comfort level with technology and a natural affinity for new digital tools and systems are a must. Candidates should have experience with multiple content management systems.
The position involves daily hands-on editorial work publishing to mobile and tablet devices and overseeing mobile production and curation for our global editions. The job requires both leadership and independent decision making in breaking news situations.
Responsibilities also include:
- Working with multiple editorial and technology teams
- Managing mobile news projects
- Mobile news layout and design
- Editing headlines and copy
- Sending push alerts in breaking news situations
- Data analysis and app technology testing
Candidates should have at least seven years of post-college journalism experience, including experience with mobile publishing. A passionate interest in mobile technology and trends, attention to detail, copy editing skills and reporting or photojournalism experience are desired. Candidates should be adept with both Windows and Mac operating systems.
Experience with graphics design and programming, JavaScript, Photoshop, news content algorithms and/or the Methode content publishing system is a plus.
The position reports to the executive mobile editor.
