Wall Street Journal editor Gerard Baker sent out the following announcement on Monday:
After many years of skillfully steering the newsroom through some turbulent financial waters and variable winds, master helmsman Alan Anspaugh is stepping aside from his role as Editor of News Operations to become Editor, News Support and Business Operations. In this new position, Al will assume two of the roles held by former Deputy Managing Editor Jim Pensiero: News liaison for Dow Jones and News Corp teams leading global security and business continuity efforts. Both areas are growing in urgency and are providing us with significant additional work. Al will also remain responsible for reaching agreements that provide outside news, images and video for our News units. He will continue his work on compliance issues, film and book deals, and ally more closely with our global real estate team on behalf of our bureaus. Al will report to Matt Murray.
In Al’s stead and in the wake of Jim’s retirement, I am delighted to announce that Christine Glancey is promoted to Editor, News Operations and Talent. Christine will assume all of the financial and budget tasks of Al’s previous job, as well as the talent management and recruitment responsibilities that were Jim’s. She is also appointed a Deputy Managing Editor and will join the masthead. Christine will lead a small, merged team of senior editors reporting to her drawn from the existing News Operations and Talent groups. Jennair Rennie will lead the finance team and Michelle LaRoche will handle the talent side. Christine will report directly to me.
Christine is a 27-year WSJ veteran and has served in leadership roles as the Journal’s Deputy National Editor and Global Copy Desk Chief and was managing editor of the WSJ Asia in Hong Kong. She joined WSJ.com in 2009, and she led news and integration efforts as the site’s deputy managing editor. Since 2013, Christine has been creating opportunities for staff development and fostering our collective digital advancement as the Journal’s first training editor. Christine has an M.A. in literature from Columbia University and a B.S. in journalism from St. John’s University. She lives in New Jersey with her husband and two daughters.
