WorkCompCentral, a national online news service, seeks a reporter to cover medicine and business — especially the business of medicine — as it relates to the workers’ compensation industry.
This is a telecommute position, but the reporter must be able to attend industry events. We will consider applicants in California or within a reasonable commuting distance from Austin, Texas or Orlando, Florida.
The person who fills this position must be capable of quickly learning how to cover a complicated industry and write clear, accurate and topical news stories for a professional readership.
We are a premium news service that depends on subscription sales to pay the bills, so we need a reporter who can dig beyond press releases and official statements to deliver quality news coverage. At least two years of daily news writing experience is required. A bachelor’s degree in journalism is preferred.
The medical/business reporter will write a wide variety of brief articles, usually assigned by an editor, and also dig for enterprise stories that can lead to “top” stories worthy of our virtual equivalent of a section front.
Applicants must be proficient in AP style, have a thorough understanding of journalism ethics and know how to quickly write well-organized and thoughtful news stories.
Candidates must have high-speed Internet access, a cell phone, a laptop and national long-distance telephone service. The position provides hourly wages, benefits after a 90-day probation period and a monthly stipend for home-office expenses.
