Reuters seeks Canadian economics reporter

June 6, 2014

Posted by Chris Roush

Reuters is looking for a dynamic, experienced journalist to lead Canadian economic coverage from Ottawa.

The Canada Economics Correspondent is responsible for reporting on the Bank of Canada and finance ministry as well as economic indicators. She or he also will regularly jump into the bureau’s coverage of political and general news. The right candidate will have a flair for writing agenda-setting stories and be able to tease innovative ideas from the most routine of economic indicators.

We are looking for someone who can cultivate excellent sources and has sound news judgment, strong writing skills, a record of breaking news and of generating compelling deeply reported enterprise pieces. Major themes include the Bank of Canada’s efforts to deal with a post-crisis housing boom that skeptics warn is in bubble territory, resource-fueled growth in Western Canada that is shifting the country’s economic axis, and the Conservative government’s plans for cutting taxes and rolling out new spending once the federal budget returns to balance next year.

With a Canadian federal election expected in 2015, the successful candidate will be expected to play a key role in coverage in the run-up to it. The role will involve travel outside of Canada for Group of 20 and other multilateral meetings.

Qualifications
– At least 5 years reporting experience
– A deep understanding of economics, monetary and fiscal policy
– Excellent news judgment and writing skills
– Proven ability to generate innovative story ideas and turn them into ready-to-run stories
– Good organizational skills, ability to manage “twin track” of breaking news and writing insightful stories
– Strong French language skills

The successful candidate will report to the Canada Bureau Chief
