Frank Barrows, the former managing editor of the Charlotte Observer, has been hired to be the executive editor of Business North Carolina, a monthly magazine also based in Charlotte. (Disclosure: I write freelance articles for Business North Carolina, including a monthly sports business column.)
The editor of the magazine, David Kinney, has been looking to hire a managing editor to potentially take over the magazine for quite some time without success. Business North Carolina is annually judged among the best monthly business magazines in the country.
Barrows retired from the Observer last spring after a 30-year career at the paper. Since that time, he was interim executive director of the N.C. Open Government Coalition. Barrows was known in the newsroom for strapping himself to a chair, often with his own belt, while writing to force himself to complete the task.
The magazine is looking for a young business writer interested in being mentored by Barrows and Kinney. For more information, contact Kinney at kinney@businessnc.com.
