Reuters global enterprise editor Mike Williams sent out the following note to staff:

Colleagues,

I’m excited to report that Mark Schoofs will join Reuters this spring as international investigations editor, based in Mexico City and reporting to me.

Mark is one of the most creative journalists in the business. He joins us from the USC Annenberg School for Communication & Journalism, where as a professor he trains reporters, leads investigative reporting initiatives, and founded the Open Source Journalism Conference, the first annual gathering in the U.S. for OSINT journalists.

Before joining USC, Mark launched the investigative team at BuzzFeed News and then served as editor-in-chief. He led BuzzFeed to its first Pulitzer Prize, in international reporting, for a series that combined OSINT work and shoe-leather reporting to expose China’s vast infrastructure for the mass detention of Uyghurs in Xinjiang. Mark also directed three series that became Pulitzer finalists, including an investigation that uncovered the true scale of suspected Russian assassinations on Western soil and the FinCen Files, a project with the ICIJ that revealed how Western banks moved trillions of dollars in suspicious transactions, facilitating the work of extremists and narcotraffickers.

Mark, who has reported from 25 countries on four continents, began his career as managing editor of the Windy City Times, Chicago’s main LGBTQ paper. As a staff writer at the Village Voice covering science and medicine, he reported, wrote and shot a series on the AIDS epidemic in Africa that won the 2000 Pulitzer in international reporting. As an investigative reporter at the Wall Street Journal, Mark and colleagues, including Maurice Tamman, produced an innovative data-driven series that exposed widespread fraud in Medicare.

In his new role, Mark will draw on his global experience and unicorn skill set to drive a broad range of coverage, both in the U.S. and abroad. Peter Hirschberg and Lori Hinnant continue to oversee Enterprise coverage outside the Americas.

Please join me in welcoming him to Reuters and wishing him success in his new role.

Best,
Mike
