The Indianapolis Business Journal is looking for our next news editor, a role that focuses largely on daily news coverage and requires a journalist with excellent news judgment, strong writing and style skills and a sense of urgency.
The news editor will work with IBJ’s team of seven reporters to cover the most pressing business and political news of the day as well as coordinate our roster of daily and weekly email newsletters. The news editor will also coordinate coverage with Inside INdiana Business and Indiana Lawyer, two other news brands within our larger company IBJ Media.
IBJ has a newsroom of 19 reporters, editors and artists who cover technology, real estate, banking, manufacturing, philanthropy, health care, government and politics in the Indianapolis region. In addition, three journalists from Inside INdiana Business, which reports statewide business news, work alongside the IBJ news team.
Editing experience is a plus. But we will consider reporters who are seeking to break into editing. What we need is a journalist who knows a good story, understands how to report and write it, and has the mentoring skills to help our team produce good journalism. Strong organization and communication skills are also key.
IBJ publishes a weekly printed paper and produces significant daily coverage at IBJ.com that is distributed through more than a dozen email newsletters (two of them sent daily).
The news editor reports to IBJ’s managing editor and editor and has the following duties:
– Coordinating daily and online news coverage, including planning for newsletters.
– Editing daily stories.
– Posting stories and photos, coordinating online graphics and creating photo galleries.
– Assisting with newsroom social media accounts.
– Working with one or two reporters on longer-term stories that will run in print.
A strong candidate will have:
– An ability to write, edit and make decisions quickly.
– Multimedia skills, including work with photos, audio and video.
– Experience covering business, government and/or politics.
– Good organizational skills.
IBJ offers a chance to work in an affordable capital city with a metro area population of more than 2 million people but in a smaller newsroom with plenty of opportunity to make a big impact. In Indianapolis, you will find professional sports, world-class museums and performance venues, and neighborhoods filled with great restaurants, bike trails and parks.
IBJ’s offices are located on the city’s historic Monument Circle—the literal and figurative heart of Indianapolis, just blocks from stadiums, the Statehouse, the Indianapolis Cultural Trail, a rapid-transit bus line and much more. Our commutes are short, our public transportation is expanding and our city and suburbs are both thriving.
To apply, email a resume, a cover letter explaining why the position appeals to you and examples of stories you’ve written or coverage you’ve directed and edited to Editor Lesley Weidenbener (lweidenbener@ibj.com) and Managing Editor Samm Quinn (squinn@ibj.com).
IBJ Media is an equal-opportunity employer, and our goal is to develop a diverse pool of candidates for this and all positions.
