Rest of World seeks an investigations editor

October 1, 2024

Posted by Chris Roush

In 2025, Rest of World will bolster our journalism with the introduction of our first-ever Investigations Editor. This role will be in charge of working with in-house reporters and editors as well as with freelance contributors to identify stories that align with our coverage areas and merit dedicated, long-term editorial focus. In addition to conceiving, executing, and publishing standalone investigative projects, this editor will work with journalists across the team to identify investigative elements within shorter stories that we publish daily. We’re looking for an experienced editor capable of operating in a player-coach capacity, as well as someone dedicated and enthusiastic about Rest of World’s mission to uncover the impact of tech outside the West.

This role can be based anywhere in the world. However, candidates must possess the right to work in their current location, as Rest of World is unable to sponsor work authorization for this role.

This editor will manage a standalone budget, hire freelancers as needed, and work closely with Rest of World’s Feature and Research editors. The editor will report to an executive editor in NYC.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and execute at least two ambitious investigative projects annually
  • Work closely with the editorial leadership and commissioning editors to identify key topics and areas of focus for shorter stories with investigative elements
  • Help reporters and editors identify daily stories that could benefit from an investigative approach and assist in execution and editing
  • Develop and maintain a network of freelance investigative reporters
  • Work closely with managers to identify and train in-house reporters on investigative reporting tools
  • Seek and establish productive partnerships for disseminating and amplifying Rest of World’s investigations

Qualifications

  • At least seven years of experience in producing deeply reported, investigative journalism
  • Ability to manage both long-term assignments while also assisting editors and reporters on shorter turnaround stories
  • A track record of impact-driven work
  • Knowledge of and interest in the topics related to technology, especially those covered by Rest of World
  • A strong work ethic, and a record as a collaborative communicator who knows how to get buy-in
  • Experience managing large, multi-part projects with different departments including visuals, audience, fact-checking, and product

How to apply

To apply, please send a resume and a short cover letter to jobs@restofworld.org with “Investigations Editor” in the subject line by October 25, 2024. In your cover letter, please share 2-3 investigative projects you’ve worked on, and describe your role in executing them. Additionally, identify two tech-related beats covered by Rest of World and explain how you might build an investigative project around them.

We will ask up to three selected finalists to take a paid edit test as part of the interview process.
