Ten business journalists were selected for the Society for Advancing Business Editing and Writing’s 2024 Goldschmidt FRED advanced data workshop on Oct. 14-15 in St. Louis.

The Fellows will visit the Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis during the program to learn about economic data. During the workshop, they will learn about different types of FRED data and explore special reports that can help them create new stories. The Fellows will also hear from speakers who will discuss how they take the pulse of the American economy, feed that information to the Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) and influence interest rate decisions.

The Fellows include:

  1. Suzannah Cavanaugh, senior reporter and podcast host/producer, The Real Deal
  2. Kate Farley, senior editor, MediaFeed
  3. Alex Gailey, lead data reporter, Bankrate
  4. Parker Leipzig, visual data journalist, CoStar News
  5. Shanna Nichols, student, The George Washington University
  6. Sam Ro, editor, TKer
  7. Augusta Victoria Saraiva, U.S. economy reporter, Bloomberg News
  8. Amber Tai, student, Boston University
  9. Taylor Tompkins, senior editor, Investopedia
  10. Andrew Vaupel, director of newsroom research, American City Business Journals

“The Goldschmidt FRED Fellowship continues to be a pioneering program with the workshop helping journalists obtain a greater understanding of FRED data, charts and better stories,” said Marty Steffens, SABEW chair at the University of Missouri, in a statement. “Reporters praise these economists as being extremely helpful and insightful in telling economic stories to our audiences.  It’s a game-changer for those who rely on FRED data.”

The workshop is funded annually by a grant from the Illinois-based Walter and Karla Goldschmidt Foundation. The program is organized by Steffens with the St. Louis Federal Reserve supplying much of the content.
