Honolulu Civil Beat seeks a business reporter

Honolulu Civil Beat is looking for an experienced business reporter/writer who will take an innovative approach to exploring the intersection of government and business in Hawaii and the Pacific.

We have a $10 billion commuter rail project in the works.

We are on the cutting edge of renewable energy.

The University of Hawaii system is one of the state’s largest employers and a significant economic engine.

So is the military and the defense industry, as well as the state and federal governments and the city of Honolulu.

Public and private labor unions are political powerhouses.

We’re interested in a writer who can explore how some of Hawaii’s major institutions are contributing to the state’s economic well-being, as well as their efforts around research, innovation and technology.

Workplace issues and the role of nonprofits in Hawaii’s business landscape are also part of this new beat.

This is primarily an enterprise and investigative job that requires excellent news judgment, sharp writing and analytical skills.

This is a new position for us and the successful candidate will have a big hand in shaping it.

An interest in and the ability to collaborate with other business writers and reporters is essential.

Qualifications This is a Honolulu-based position and we are seeking a reporter with a minimum of 5 years’ experience in business, economic and financial reporting.

Data journalism skills and knowledge of Hawaii, its culture and its issues are a plus.

Be detail-oriented, with a proven ability to effectively juggle multiple tasks in a deadline-driven environment Possess excellent reporting and writing skills to accurately produce content for our websites and publications Able to develop sources and resources, generate story ideas and meet deadlines to create content placing the utmost emphasis on balanced reporting and high ethical standards.
