Seattle Times seeks a business reporter

Posted by Chris Roush

The Seattle Times, a family-owned news organization and one of the nation’s premier regional news sources, is looking for an experienced reporter to join our Pulitzer Prize-winning newsroom’s business desk. The successful candidate will embrace general-assignment reporting, following the business news of the day in a community that makes lots of it. If sliding between coverage of the world’s largest companies, small business and working people appeals, this is the role for you.

Quick-turn, high-impact business stories form the core of this position, but you will not be writing people-on-the-move pieces or rewriting press releases. You will be a key player in our daily coverage online and in print. All our reporters craft enterprise pieces; you’ll do so with accuracy and flair in a well-resourced newsroom that believes in visual journalism and presentation.

Responsibilities

  • Cover breaking business news.
  • Develop depth on consequential coverage areas, building expertise to support enterprise reporting.
  • Be inclusive in coverage, developing a range of sources and story ideas that fairly represent the rich cultural diversity of our region.
  • Use analytics to inform coverage decisions.
  • Collaborate with editors and reporters across the newsroom.
  • Work with digital producers, photographers and designers to coordinate visuals and online stories.

Qualifications

We are committed to diversity and creating an inclusive newsroom, and encourage members of traditionally underrepresented communities to apply. If your profile doesn’t match this job description exactly, you may still be a candidate for this position. Please let us know how your skills and experience relate to the role and its objectives.

  • Experience: Professional experience as a staff reporter for a news organization. The successful candidate will have professional reporting experience. While a passion for business coverage is required, experience covering business is not.
  • Be willing to engage with people and bring their lived experiences into reporting.
  • A track record of writing clearly, accurately and creatively and meeting deadlines.
  • Must understand and uphold the standards, ethics and mission of journalism at The Seattle Times, regardless of platform.

Work Schedule: This is a hybrid position based in Seattle that requires occasional night and weekend work.

Compensation: The full salary range for this position is $60,000 to $101,500. We typically pay between $60,000 to $85,000, depending on experience and qualifications.
