Politico seeks a competition reporter in Brussels

February 14, 2024

Posted by Chris Roush

Politico Europe is looking for an experienced reporter to help drive our coverage of antitrust, state aid and industrial policy news at the EU and national level. The job covering the heart of the inner workings of Brussels involves the EU’s front-page showdowns with both governments and Big Tech firms.

The position is a full-time role based in our Brussels office.

The work will involve close coordination with other teams in Brussels, across Europe and in the U.S.

What You’ll Do

The reporter will be competing in a space where deep sourcing is vital and breaking news is the primary goal. Building a network of trusted contacts, quizzing regulators and quickly analyzing court rulings are a routine part of the job. The ideal candidate will shift seamlessly from topic to topic, writing about competition across sectors from energy to financial services.

The role is part of a three-person team working on competition and industrial policy, so news about mega-mergers and Europe’s pursuit of industrial champions and subsidies push will also be front and center. Alongside breaking news, the reporter will jointly author a must-read newsletter.

The successful candidate will be able not only to write authoritatively about the high-level political priorities behind antitrust and subsidies, but also cater to a sophisticated audience of competition insiders for POLITICO Pro, our subscription news service.

What You’ll Need

  • Reporter with at least three years of professional experience, including at least some competition policy, business or financial reporting experience;
  • Knowledge of European politics and policy;
  • Strong English-language writing skills;
  • Ability to work under pressure and on deadline;
  • Knowledge of other European languages is a plus.
