Monterey County Weekly is looking for a passionate and innovative editorial leader to join its team.
Reporting to the editor, responsibilities include:
- Monterey County NOW editor; responsible for creating a vibrant, inspiring, factually accurate and libel-proof newsletter that advances the Weekly’s/NOW’s mission;
- Edit our coverage of arts and culture, music and food; think big and shape coverage, while also focusing on details and accuracy;
- Work with editorial colleagues to produce breaking news, enterprise stories and alternative forms of storytelling; with a side of copyediting and proofreading;
- Contribute bite-sized to long-form news, features and arts and culture stories for print, newsletter and for our website.
The ideal candidate will have at least four years of professional reporting and editing experience as well as college media and/or internship experience; a degree in journalism, digital media or a similar field (graduate degree a plus).
Monterey County Weekly, now in its 35th year, is the largest-circulation newspaper in a vibrant mid-sized market on California’s Central Coast. While publishing technology has changed radically over that span, the company continues today to be feisty, successful, local and independent—as it has been since day one. Good journalism continues to be good for business.
The paper’s coverage is almost 100-percent local, yet we have a broad worldview as well. The paper is situated in one of the great regions of the country where culture and history are alive and well. There are plenty of stories here that deserve to be told well.
Monterey County Weekly offers a competitive salary and benefits package, including a 401(k) match and profit sharing. This position’s salary range is from $65,000 – $68,000 per year, full time.
