A reporter uses basic facts to develop compelling, timely and well-sourced stories that accurately reflect the nature of the community or beat the reporter covers, in this case Fremont and Page Counties in southwest Iowa.
Responsibilities:
- This should be a combination of weekly stories and other assignments undertaken in conjunction with a supervisor
- Perform and execute all work practices in a safe manner. Constant safety awareness is mandatory for all employees
- Initiates and coordinates responses to sources, readers and other community members through email and phone calls
- Accepts story assignments, whether for news or special sections, cheerfully and completes them as quickly as possible
- Takes clear photographs and gets information and names for cutlines
- Communicates frequently with editors and other newsroom staff to coordinate plans
Qualifications:
- Equivalent experience, including internships, in news reporting is also acceptable in lieu of a degree
- Completes work in a timely manner and meets deadlines
- Write stories clearly with little need for editing
- Takes note of errors and does not repeat them
- Spells correctly and never misspells names
- Can be reached by phone by editors or paginators within a reasonable amount of time to address concerns
- Multimedia elements to go with stories
- Valid driver’s license and insurance required
- On-site, regular and reliable attendance is required
- Assists in special projects as needed
- An individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily
- Must have exceptional spelling and writing abilities
- Ability to communicate effectively in person, on the telephone, and through electronic means
- Ability to write copy in accordance with good grammar, accurate spelling and AP style.ntnt
