About the role:
Our ideal candidate is a fun, witty, outgoing editor with bulletproof managerial skills, someone who can move smoothly from sculpting copy to holding writers accountable, from dreaming up story angles to programming out assignments months in advance. You should have a thorough understanding and knowledge of the Peninsula. We’re looking for a sharp operator who is a self-starter and does not need a great deal of supervision. You should not be afraid to apply if you do not have a great deal of experience as this position is more about the person than the number of years on the job.
Job responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
- Curating quality story ideas and shepherding them from infancy to production
- Writing and editing a mix of feature stories and shorter pieces
- Making freelance assignments and grooming new freelance talent
- Crafting headlines and working with the AD to make the magazine look and feel amazing
- Putting together the vast myriad of items (bylines, photo captions, tracking down photos) necessary
- Managing the Assistant Editor
Successful candidates will possess the following skills/abilities
- Excellent organizational skills
- Great facility with language
- Excellent writing ability
- Enthusiasm storytelling and making use of modern web tools to do so
- A nose for good narratives and the ability to execute them to their fullest potential
- Precise, grammatically minded line-editing chops
- An appreciation for deadlines
- An upbeat, fun attitude and a willingness to do what is necessary to achieve excellence.
