The Washington Post has appointed Susannah George Gulf bureau chief to lead coverage of the Persian Gulf and Iran.
The Post reports:
“In her new role, we expect that Susannah will be based in Dubai as part of a Middle East team that also includes Post correspondents based in Beirut, Cairo, Istanbul and Jerusalem.
“She will prioritize coverage that illuminates the transformations within Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates and other gulf states, as well as the ways in which they are using their money and power to carve out increasingly influential roles on the world stage.
“She will also take responsibility for coverage of Iran, the region’s other major military power and one whose tensions with gulf neighbors have long been a flashpoint.”
For the past four years, George served as Afghanistan and Pakistan bureau chief.
Prior to joining the Post, she was at The Associated Press where she held the posts of acting Baghdad bureau chief, and intelligence and national security correspondent.
There, she also won the 2017 Overseas Press Club Joe and Laurie Dine Award for best international reporting on human rights in any medium.
She also freelanced for Foreign Policy, NPR and The Daily Beast.
Previously, she worked at NPR for more than eight years, where she held the posts of Baghdad bureau producer, producer, and associate producer and editor (foreign desk, election unit, Newscast).
George graduated from George Washington University.
