The Boston Globe is hiring an editorial director for its newsletters. We’re looking for someone with a wealth of energy and ideas who can elevate one of our most important channels for connecting with readers.
The director will take responsibility for our suite of roughly two dozen Boston Globe-branded newsletters, as well as the creation of future newsletter products and campaigns. These newsletters cover a broad swath of topics, from tech to events to sports, and represent a substantial portion of our overall subscriber readership.
The director should be a seasoned editor with extensive knowledge of the newsletter space. They should be able to establish an editorial vision and identify target audiences to match the personalized form of a newsletter. Additionally, they should be capable of working with writers to help craft a voice and tone to match a newsletter’s goal and purpose.
They should also possess a solid understanding of reader analytics and the operational aspects of publishing a newsletter. They should be adept at establishing KPIs for success and working to refine and grow audiences. Furthermore, they should understand product lifecycles and be comfortable working with designers to continuously enhance and improve the look, functionality, and performance of our newsletters.
Finally, the director needs to be able to work collaboratively with stakeholders across a broad organization, both inside and outside of the newsroom.
Qualifications:
- At least 5-8 years of journalism experience as a reporter, editor, or producer.
- Previous experience creating and launching a successful suite of newsletters.
- Comfortable collaborating with a varied group of journalists, and also colleagues in sales, marketing, product, innovation, and technology roles.
- Hands-on skill with the operational aspects of creating and deploying newsletters. Prior knowledge of Mailchimp or Salesforce Marketing Cloud a plus.
- Excellent journalism skills, including writing, editing, and news judgment.
- Comfortable setting an editorial vision and working with writers to achieve a specific tone, voice, and audience.
- Skilled at project management, multitasking, and lateral management of teams and initiatives.
- A willingness to adapt and be audience focused, with a curious mindset and a commitment to creating an inclusive work environment
