The Albuquerque Journal, New Mexico’s largest daily newspaper, is seeking a Breaking News/Cops reporter. We seek a digitally-focused reporter who can own the breaking news/cops beat in our news-rich region. Experience with cops and courts is helpful, but not necessary. A willingness to dig in deep is just as important. In this assignment, the reporter can cover anything and everything related to police, fire and general assignment that is important to people in New Mexico. In addition to daily coverage the reporter will track trends, write impactful enterprise stories about law enforcement and related topics.

Candidates should expect to work nights and weekends on a regular basis.

Are you a storyteller, adept at using social media? That’s a key expectation for this job.

If you have an enthusiasm in covering cops and breaking news in a city where there’s always news to report, you might be the right candidate for the position.

Requirements

We are searching for a reporter that can identify trends and accurately report on what’s happening in law enforcement from a social, cultural and solutions perspective.

Required skills include:

  • Ability to produce content that is clean and accurate.
  • Comfortable using social media to enhance reporting and promote stories.
  • Understands reporting ethics and sourcing.
  • Knowledge of AP grammar and style.
  • Thrives in a fast-paced news environment and understands the importance of digital-first.
