The Wire China seeks a staff writer

The Wire is a digital news magazine dedicated to understanding and explaining the biggest stories of our time: China’s economic rise. Founded by David Barboza, who earned two Pulitzer Prizes while serving as the Shanghai correspondent for The New York Times, our team is a diverse group of editors, writers, and columnists stationed around the globe. Features from The Wire were named finalists in 2021 for the prestigious SOPA awards, along with one of our staff writers winning this year’s SOPA Award for Young Journalists.

The Wire China is looking for a staff writer to join our team. Our mission is to provide accurate, balanced, and thoughtful reporting, in the pursuit of truth, “without fear or favor.”

The ideal candidate will have the ability to write and edit with accuracy and clarity; experience working in a news environment, and a deep understanding of China’s economy and the country’s influence on global politics, business, labor, the environment, and financial markets.

Who You Are / You Have

    • At least 3 years of journalism experience
    • An ability to generate story ideas and pitches consistently
    • A passion for China news and a curiosity about current events
    • Analytical thinking and insightful writing that pushes stories past the headlines
    • Relentless and indefatigable reporting style and attitude
    • Teamwork mindset in the newsroom and collaborative approach to the editing process

What You’ll Do at The Wire China:

      • Pitch story ideas related to China’s economy or business environment
      • -Write one 3,000–4,000 word cover story a month that is heavily researched and reported
      • -Write two 1,000 word ‘news analysis’ articles a month that are original and not reactive
      • -Conduct and transcribe interviews with China watchers for our Q&A section
      • -Conduct research on Chinese companies using our sister platform, Wirescreen.ai
      • -Help conceive of graphics and accompanying data sources to run with your articles
      • -Contribute collaboratively and collegially as part of a dynamic and small team that is committed to insightful, accurate and well-crafted coverage of China’s economic rise
    • Ideally, you’ll also have:
    • Proficient Chinese language skills
    • Experience with business journalism
    • Experience with investigative reporting
