The Messenger entertainment team is seeking a digital culture writer and reporter who will be the next great addition to our talented, collaborative and fast-paced team. The ideal candidate is ambitious, hard-working, can work independently and is deeply knowledgeable about digital culture and core reporting methods. You have a proven ability to spot and report trends, you know the tenets of journalism and reporting, including fact-checking.
You will be reporting and writing multiple stories a day from explainers, trend pieces, interviews, news stories, etc. You should have a strong grasp of SEO best practices and are adept at using things like Google Trends — plus non-traditional sources to find unique news and stories daily (could be everything from a subReddit to TikTok to local news outlets).
Responsibilities:
- You will be reporting and writing multiple stories a day from explainers, trend pieces, interviews, news stories, etc
- Use strong news judgment to find and cover digital culture stories, from breaking news to finding ways to break news and exclusives
- Write and report multiple stories daily, focusing on the day’s biggest stories across the digital culture space
- The ability to juggle several stories / projects at the same time
- Write accurate news stories quickly (your copy should be clear, clean, concise and engaging)
Qualifications:
- The ideal candidate is ambitious, hard-working, can work independently and is deeply knowledgeable about digital culture and core reporting methods
- You have a proven ability to spot and report trends, you know the tenets of journalism and reporting, including fact-checking
- 1-10+ years of professional experience in journalism
- Have a deep understanding of the digital culture space, including finding ways to break news
- Have a strong grasp of SEO best practices and implement them
- Have a strong grasp of tools like Google Trends, etc
- Solid news judgment, commitment to fairness and accuracy
- Strong writer (clear, clean, and concise)
- Experience working in a fast-paced news environment
- Work cooperatively and adaptively in a team setting
- Ability to be flexible based on the news cycle
Salary Range: $65,000 – $90,000 a year *
