The Associated Press seeks a Spanish-language journalist to cover water, climate change and biodiversity in Latino communities in the United States. This newsperson can be based in any U.S. city with an AP office.
Responsibilities:
- Reporting to the global Climate & Environment team, with a dotted line to the Latin America Desk, you will report on myriad water, climate and environment issues in communities with large populations of Latinos.
- These issues will include access to drinking water, exposure to water-borne diseases and water conservation techniques
- You will report on extreme weather events – particularly flooding from rising rivers – changing agricultural practices and climate-induced migration from Latin America to the United States
- You will explore engagement in climate solutions, ranging from technological to urban planning
- You will also be available to help with breaking news and periodically do other assignments not directly connected to your beat
Qualifications:
- We’re looking for someone with a deep understanding of climate change, water issues and Latino communities
- You are a native Spanish speaker who writes in Spanish, and you demonstrate strong communication skills and work collaboratively with diverse teams of journalists who operate in all formats: text, photo, video, audio, digital/social, interactive and graphics
- You should be hungry to tell stories about people and communities that often get little news coverage
- We’re looking for someone who works effectively as part of a team
- You have a great news sense and the ability to communicate and drive stories that people will want to share, like and talk about on social media and other platforms
- You’re eager to pursue innovative and inclusive coverage techniques while maintaining AP’s standards for integrity and objectivity, and you have the ability to juggle multiple projects across formats and deliver success on complex, challenging story lines
- As an AP journalist, you must be able to and willing to work at night and on weekends as coverage demands
- Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience, such as at least five years of full-time work as an editor, reporter or social media producer at a daily newspaper, broadcast station, online or digital news outlet or AP bureau
- Authorization to work in the U.S. will be mandatory
- Advanced-level professional competency in written and spoken English
